Karachi Restaurants That Show What Desi Dining Is All About!
While there are many namesakes of Meerath in the City, the Meerath Kebab house at Gurumandir leads the way! This absolute legend has been in the business for the longest time and if you haven’t eaten here, trust me, you are missing out! Be sure to try their famous Kebabs with parathas. For desert, their kheer is to die for!
This relatively new establishment is located at Do Darya. Kolachi has literally taken Karachi by storm. Quite possibly “the” best new place in town. Their Peshawari karahi is out of the world, so is the paneer reshmi handi or the green handi or the lahori fish or hunzai kebabs or or or… Every dish rates 10 out of 10. What’s more? You eat along the sea and the service is outstanding as well. Two thumbs up!!
3. Sheikh Abdul Ghaffar Kebab House
Sheikh Abdul Ghaffar Kebab House is located in a side lane off Tariq Road. They also have a branch at Port Grand which is doing some outstanding business. They serve the most stupendous behari chicken and the juiciest gola kebabs. The smoky and earthy flavour of their BBQ will render you, BBQ enthusiasts, speechless.
4. BarBQ Tonight
BBQ Tonight is one of the largest and most popular restaurants not only in Karachi but quite possibly Pakistan.Their Afghan cuisine draws hundreds of people every night to the restaurant and it always tickles my taste buds. Every BBQ dish here impresses you with its unique taste. You will love the brain masala, the palak paneer, the grilled pomfret… There is a reason this four storey, humongous establishment, is still jam-packed every day!
5. Bundoo Khan
Well, first of all, let me clarify, all Budoo Khan outlets are real. All Bundoo Khan outlets are owned by sons of the original Al-Haaj Bundoo Khan. Anyways Bundoo Khan is the stuff folklore is made up from. Their Chicken Tikka, Seekh Kebab, Bihari Kebab, Boti Kebabs with parathas will have steam coming out of your mouth. Not been to Bundoo Khan? You’re missing out on a big part of Karachi’s identity!
6. Waheed Kebab House
Situated off Burns road, Waheed Kebab House is “the” place for ‘Fry Kebab’. A well-rounded menu adds to the experience. Items like a variety of Niharis, kebabs and meaty treats are just out of this world. The Daal is extraordinary! The secret… they use butter and not ghee! Fried kebab along with the puri paratha and the smokin’ hot green chutney… wow!
7. Zameer Ansari
Zameer Ansari is located in the Delhi Mercantile Society, Bahadurabad near Alamgir Masjid. It has just opened a branch at Ocean Mall as well. This place started off as a small side road eatery and has grown into a big thing right in front of my eyes. It serves the best Delhi style BBQ in Karachi. The Malai Chicken, Reshmi Kebab, Fired Kebab and Dhaga Kebab are extremely popular. Often jampacked, it’s best to get there early!
8. Zahid Nihari
This popular establishment is located on the main Tariq Road, Karachi. It is home to the best Nihari in town. Its Kunna Nihari is a gem that most people don’t know of. They even sell tin-packed nihari for home use. Everyone’s got a crush on Nihari, and if you haven’t had Zahid’s, then you’re really missing out!
9. Sajjad restaurant
Sajjad Restaurant is renowned for having the best buffet in all of Karachi. The plethora of dishes on offer will set your taste buds on fire best extinguished by the open expanse of ocean views. Sajjad Restaurant offers Open Air and Covered Dining Hall facilities, a play area is also available for children. Enjoy!
10. Dhoraji Gola Ganda
As soon as summer arrives Karachiites head down to Dhoraji to get some respite from the hot and humid weather. Over 25 to 30 Gola Ganda stalls are lined up on Dhoraji and the variety of golas on offer is always growing. Rainbow colored ice shaving with some condensed milk (yum) on top, the golas are the “desi stuff” dreams are made up of!

Sabri Nihari House located at MA Jinnah road is one of the most famous Nihari spots in Karachi. The atmosphere of the restaurant is conducive for both families as well as friends. Unforgettable taste at very affordable prices, that’s what Sabri is all about.
12. Afridi Inn
Afridi Inn Restaurant started off from the highway, opened a branch in Clifton and now it has a home at Do Darya as well. Their outstanding menu includes White Karahi, Mutton Karahi, Chicken Karahi, Biryani, Pulaao and more. Village style sitting on charpais makes the experience all the more interesting! Kahwa or their pink tea is the perfect end to a perfect evening.
13. Peshawari Ice Cream
Peshawari Ice Cream parlour in Saddar is the oldest ice cream shop in Karachi. It started in 1948 and has since opened numerous branches throughout the City. All major flavours are available, but their speciality is PESHAWARI ICE CREAM. The milky vanilla flavour is the staple and while all other flavors and concoctions are great as well, there is just nothing like the milky taste of Peshawari. They should really look to package and export this stuff!
14. Lal Qila
Lal Qila is a buffet style restaurant that redefined desi dining in the modern era. It has all the classic desi dishes with a Mughal inspired decor and ambiance. Lal Qila is situated in a castle setting on the main Shahrah-e-Faisal and one trip down to the Lal Qila is never enough!
15. Karachi Broast
Karachi Broast started off back in the day as a hole in the wall serving Chicken Broast with raita and buns. It is the finest Broast place in Karachi and while its menu has grown exponentially along with its client base, the traditional Broast remains its biggest seller. Orders take a long time because of the huge client traffic Karachi Broast has, so take that into account before whetting your appetite for a piece of chicken broast.
